French legislation mandates the maintenance of a safety register within every establishment, an obligation stemming from several articles. For ERPs (Public Access Buildings), residential buildings, and IGHs (High-Rise Buildings), these requirements are set out in the Construction and Housing Code (CCH). The Labor Code (CT) applies to ERTs (Workplaces). The content of the safety register is also subject to legal requirements, as this document serves as proof of the monitoring of safety, fire safety, and accessibility for the establishment in question.

What must the safety register contain?
The safety register must include all information necessary for the proper operation of the safety department :
Identification and characteristics of the establishment:
- Type and category of the establishment
- Manager or legal representative
- Building plans
Useful addresses and phone numbers:
- Emergency and rescue services
- Technicians and service providers
List and location of safety equipment:
- Fire extinguishers, alarm systems, emergency lighting, etc.
Article R*143-44 of the CCH defines the information that must be recorded in the safety register. The list of information is as follows:
- Personnel and the status of staff assigned to fire safety duties
- General and specific instructions established in the event of a fire
- Evacuation procedures for different types of disabilities
- Inspections and checks of installations and equipment, including the dates of visits and any resulting observations
- Development and renovation work, including completion dates, nature of the work, names of contractors or service providers, and the name of the person responsible for overseeing the project (architect, technician, etc.)
The safety register: a tool for monitoring and traceability
Above all, the safety register must serve as evidence of facility safety monitoring and ensure the traceability of information. In addition to dates and details regarding inspections, visits, and renovation work, it must record every safety-related event and be kept strictly up to date. The following information must therefore be included in the register:
- Inspections, observations, and requirements from safety commissions
- Periodic evacuation drills and fire safety exercises
- Staff training records (current certifications, refresher training, etc.)
